A few weeks ago, Oksana Krasan was returning from work, walking down the streets of Limassol, Cyprus, when she glimpsed a group of people gathered around a cardboard box on the side of the road near her apartment.
Peeking into the box, Krasan discovered the source of the confusion — three kittens, barely a week old, were huddled inside.
“Clearly someone threw them away there, because they still had their eyes closed,” Krasan wrote in a Facebook post. “They were very weak and were desperately crying.”
Krasan and the other onlookers scoured the area for a mother cat but couldn’t find one. They came to the heartbreaking conclusion that the kittens had likely been abandoned by someone who didn’t want to take care of them. No one in the group had the means to house the babies, so they waited for someone to step up. Hours went by, and the kittens remained homeless. Eventually, Krasan realized what she had to do.
“I couldn’t listen to them suffering any longer,” Krasan told The Dodo.
Krasan went to a local veterinarian and bought a special kitten formula. She asked experts for advice on fostering. Then, she made a comfortable space for the kittens in her bathroom.
Caring for the babies wasn’t easy. Krasan enlisted a friend to help feed them every few hours. Then, she began teaching the kittens how to use the litter box. She felt an obligation to the kittens and wanted to see them thrive.
“Since I decided to take them, I couldn’t let them down,” Krasan said. “I had to do everything I could for them to find a loving family.”
The kittens eventually began thriving in Krasan’s care, revealing their true personalities.
“They are very playful, as all kittens [are], and very sweet,” Krasan said.
Krasan posted about the kittens on Facebook, looking for potential families. Already, she’s received a ton of interest. But Krasan won’t hand the kittens to just anyone — she’s intent on finding these babies the perfect families so that they won’t have to make it on their own ever again.
“I got quite a lot of responses,” Krasan said. “I’m gonna make home checks to make sure they are gonna end up in good hands.”
