We Took Our Three-Legged Frenchie Camping In A Vineyard

SATURDAY

7:30 A.M. My boyfriend Jeremy and I wake up, excited to set out on an adventure. Today we’re taking our dogs Beth and Billie to go camping at Windfall Vineyards in Amity, Oregon. Beth is an older, 3-legged gal with lots of personality. Billie is a 5-month-old rescue puppy with energy to spare.

We spend the morning packing up lots of food and water and loading it all into our camper van.

9:00 A.M. We set out on the road. The pups are initially excited and curious — gazing out the windows at the scenery speeding by. Beth is pretty vocal for the first leg of the drive, but soon loses interest and falls asleep.

11:00 A.M. In need of a driving break, we stop for a brief hike and stretch our legs. Beth is strapped to me in her carrier (her three little legs get tired pretty fast).

This is Billie’s first trip, and I love watching her excitedly sniff and explore.

6:00 P.M. Finally, we reach the vineyard where we’ll be camping tonight. We set up our spot and take a leisurely stroll around the area. Jeremy plays with his new drone, capturing cool shots of us from above. Billie roams around in the open grass while Beth hangs closer to me, offering support as I prepare dinner.

8:00 P.M. We start winding down for bed. Jeremy and I pop open a nice bottle of wine from the vineyard where we’re camping. We enjoy a light dinner, gazing out over the scenery and up at the clear sky, using a stargazing app on our iPad to identify constellations. The pups eventually fall asleep in our laps.

10:00 P.M. It’s bedtime. Our family of four snuggles into the camper van.

SUNDAY

3:00 A.M. We’re awoken to the sound of driving rain and harsh winds. Jeremy and I move the van to a more sheltered area within the vineyard to avoid potential flooding and mud.

7:00 A.M. Everyone wakes up. The storm has passed. Jeremy and I sip coffee and snack on a big breakfast. Eventually, we take the pups on one last long jaunt through the vineyard, savoring our final moments here.

11:00 A.M. It’s time to head back. As we meander down long stretches of highway, I feel tired from the night’s events and ready to be home. I reflect on our camping trip, feeling so grateful for the moments spent with Jeremy and our dogs.

I can tell Billie had fun on her first mini vacation. Beth, too, seems to have had a nice time. Now that Beth is older, I take far less for granted. Spending quality time with her is always a blessing.
