Shelter Dog Extends Paw to Strangers, Hoping for a Second Chance

If you visit the main adoption floor at the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast (HSTC), you’ll pass a lot of sweet dogs hoping for a home. But you won’t see Deuce.

It’s not that the black-and-white pittie doesn’t want to be front and center — he loves attention. But the busy adoption floor can be noisy and stressful at times, so he stays in the back.

When shelter staff or potential adopters go to the back kennels, Deuce is always ready to catch their eye. He places his paw on the fence and begs to be noticed as people walk past him.

“Deuce almost always has his paws up on the cage,” Sarah Fisher, communications manager at HSTC, told The Dodo. “He is always tracking people with his eyes, eager to get any small amount of attention.”

This isn’t Deuce’s first stay at the shelter. He first arrived in September of last year after being abandoned by his owner. He was adopted in November, but only spent a month in the home before his new owner’s health declined and he found himself back at HSTC.

“When he was surrendered to us the second time, Deuce jumped up on the counter and greeted everyone while they were sitting at their computers. It was quite a sight,” Fisher said.

However, the calm dog with the emotional eyes that adopters see behind the bars isn’t what you get outside the kennel. And this is what has stopped Deuce’s dreams of a home and family from coming true.

“When people visit him, he is calm and loving, but gets extremely rambunctious when taken out of the kennel,” Fisher said. “Unfortunately, his visitors were not ready for the training commitment so decided against adopting him. Our staff has been really wonderful taking him out multiple times a day on long walks, training time in the agility field, and off-leash time in the play yards. They also give him fun enrichment puzzles to pass the time.”

Deuce is a full-grown puppy with a heart as big as his personality. He has so much to offer, but in return, he needs time and patience.

“Our lead trainer, Heidi Fischer, states that he would be best in a home that can provide daily exercise and leash training. She said he has great engagement with using treats and is very trainable,” Fisher said. “Deuce loves to walk on a leash while holding toys in his mouth. Our training team works with him every day, and he has been making great progress.”

Most of all, Deuce needs someone to give him a chance.

“Deuce is an extremely loyal dog,” Fisher said. “We are hoping that somebody will see his potential like we do.”
