Senior Dog Spent 10 Years Chained Outside—Now Rescued, His Life Has Completely Transformed

It’s heartbreaking that some dogs spend their lives in bad housing situations, neglected and denied the love they deserve. But it’s never too late to get a second chance.

That was the case recently, as one senior dog who spent a decade chained up in a backyard got a new home, and will spend the rest of his days enjoying the beach ❤️

According to a press release from PETA, a dog named Rusty spent his life tied up in a “tiny dirt pen” in his owner’s yard in North Carolina. For nearly a decade, PETA caseworkers tried to get the owner to surrender Rusty to their care so they could find him a suitable home, without success.

Not willing to give up on the poor dog, they did what they could to make his life tolerable, bringing him food and toys and providing insulating straw to keep him warm during the winter months.

Finally, their persistence paid off, as Rusty’s owner finally agreed to surrender him into their care. After more than a decade, “Rusty said goodbye to the tiny patch of dirt forever,” the organization wrote in their press release.

Rusty spent a brief period in foster care before he was adopted by Florida woman Hannah Caldwell, who heard about him online. After a joyous “retirement party” with his friends at PETA, Rusty was driven down to Florida to begin his new life.

Now, his life couldn’t be more different. Far from being kept tied up outside in the cold, Rusty will get to enjoy his senior years with his loving new owner, exploring the sunny beaches of Florida. Video shared by the animal rights organization shows Rusty happily walking on the beach with his owner.

And Rusty is finally an “indoor dog” — he enjoys snuggling up with his new owners on the sofa, a comfort he had been denied his entire life. After so many years of neglect, Rusty’s life has completely turned around thanks to his rescuers.

“It took almost a decade for PETA’s fieldworkers to free Rusty from his constant confinement in a dirt prison cell, but they never gave up on him,” PETA Senior Vice President Daphna Nachminovitch said in the press release. “PETA urges everyone to keep their companion animals indoors with the rest of the family and to lobby elected officials to ban unattended tethering, to help ensure that dogs like Rusty aren’t kept chained outdoors like an old bicycle.”

No dog should have to spend their life tied up outside in the cold, but we’re glad that Rusty was rescued and finally has a loving family. We know he will spend the rest of his days enjoying walks on the sunny beaches ❤️
