Resilient Pup Abandoned in Michigan Named After Detroit’s Tough NFL Team

You’d be surprised by some dogs’ resilience, especially ones in need. Just when you think they reached the lowest point of their lives at no fault of their own, they begin to rise and defy all expectations.

This abandoned pup found at the front door of a Michigan adoption center is Exhibit A!

She was abandoned in the middle of the freezing night with only a blanket. When the rescuers spotted her, they thought she was already deceased, but then she started to show her remarkable spirit!

They Thought She Crossed The Rainbow Bridge

Corinne, director of Grosse Pointe Animal Adoption Society in Michigan, was shocked when she arrived at work the following morning. The heartbreaking site at the front door left her speechless and she immediately rushed to help the abandoned pup.

“It was found this morning on just a blanket.  By its condition, we think it was there most of the night in the cold,” GPAAS wrote in a Facebook post.

Martin took the dog inside to assess its condition.

“I pulled it inside the building, so I could assess the pup and see what was going on,” Martin told WXYZ Detroit.

The dog was all covered in blood, with her feet swollen. She suffered from a severe case of mange, with almost no hair and skin that was so dry it caused itching and pain.

Luckily, this sweet pup’s life was not in danger as they initially had thought.

Still, she was safely transported to a local Michigan vet hospital for further treatment. The pup required several days of treatment, including medicated baths and antibiotics, as her skin was in terrible shape.

Upon sharing the news on Facebook, the dog and her caregivers received support from followers nationwide.

However, one thing was missing – the pup’s name

The Michigan rescue asked their friends and followers to help them name this resilient pup who had survived the worst trauma of her life, and one commenter came up with the perfect suggestion!

The Name That Suits Her Perfectly

Ladies and gentlemen, meet Gritty, who received her pawesome name after the state’s NFL team, the Detroit Lions (well-known for their grit)!

“Gritty…not a very feminine name, but she certainly embodies the spirit of our Detroit Lions…never give up,” the commenter wrote.

As it turns out, the name could not be more fitting. Gritty indeed possesses the grit that helped her cope during tough times. And, now that she’s finally on safe ground, her unbreakable spirit continues to dazzle everyone even more.

Gritty’s recovery process has gone better than expected. Within just a few days, she has already started to feel so much better and her fabulous fur is beginning to grow!

For now, Gritty will stay with her foster who has experience caring for special-needs pups.
When she’s ready, she will be available for adoption through the GPAAS rescue. Hopefully, Gritty will find someone who understands just how perfect she is… and that her name isn’t just a coincidence!
