Rescuer’s Heart Breaks After Reading Note About A Dog Sleeping On Street

Carolina wasn’t immediately concerned the first time she encountered a black-and-tan dog sleeping on the sidewalk during her daily commute. The sweet pup, curled up in a ball, was resting beside a typical house in her Cuautitlan, Mexico, neighborhood, so Carolina assumed she was already home.

“I thought she lived there, so I went home without feeling worried,” Carolina later wrote in a letter to local rescues. “But that was my route, and every time I passed by there, I would see her.”

After running into the dog in the same spot a few times, Carolina began to suspect that no one was looking out for her. She packed dog food for her commute and fed the pup every time she passed by. After each feeding session, Carolina would knock on the door behind her to no avail.

“I knocked on the door three days in a row, and no one answered — there was only a window open,” Carolina wrote. “So, I told her, ‘I’m going to help you.’”

After the third failed attempt at contacting the homeowners, Carolina scooped the dog, whom she named Baguira, into her arms. She carried Baguira to her car and then drove directly to the vet.

Carolina had Baguira spayed, vaccinated and treated for parasites. The sweet pup spent the next few days healing at the clinic while Carolina tried to determine who she belonged to once and for all.

“I went back to where I picked her up, and, surprise, this time they opened the door,” Carolina wrote.

According to Carolina’s letter, the girl recognized Baguira but denied being her owner, stating that she had no interest in taking care of her.

“I didn’t have it in me to leave her there, where they didn’t want her and with an impending rainstorm,” Carolina wrote. “She’s a loyal puppy …”

Carolina ultimately decided to take Baguira home, but she knew she couldn’t keep her long-term. So, she wrote a letter detailing Baguira’s backstory and shared it with every rescue in her area.

[She’s a puppy, approximately six months old. I saw her curled up in a ball outside of a house. I thought she lived there, so I went home without feeling worried. But that was my route, and every time I passed by there, I would see her. Each time I saw her, I would give her some food. I knocked on the door three days in a row, and no one answered — there was only a window open. So, I told her, ‘I’m going to help you.’ I carried her into my car and went straight to the veterinarian. I had her spayed, vaccinated, and treated for parasites.

Once she was ready, the hard part came: figuring out who she belonged to. I went back to where I picked her up, and, surprise, this time, they opened the door. I told the girl about the dog, and she said, ‘Ah, yes! I’ve seen her, but I’m not going to take responsibility for her.’

And so, I didn’t have it in me to leave her there, where they didn’t want her and with an impending rainstorm. She’s a loyal puppy who needs space to live out her puppy era. I would like to be her temporary home, but I can’t give her what she needs as a puppy: running and running.

She likes to walk on the leash and run like a deer. Baguira has so much love to give.]

When Beatriz Ordaz, a local rescuer and animal advocate, saw the letter, her heart broke in two. She recognized the dog but didn’t realize that the sweet girl didn’t belong to the home she always slept in front of.

“She refused to separate from the door,” Ordaz told The Dodo. “My son wanted to bring her home, but I currently have a foster dog and can’t take in another.”

While Ordaz wasn’t able to offer Baguira a home, she became determined to help Carolina find one. The two have been on the hunt for Baguira’s perfect match ever since, and they’re hoping to find them soon.

Baguira’s still at Carolina’s house being loved and cared for, but she would thrive even more in a more permanent and spacious home.

“Her perfect home would be one with a big yard so she can run and run and a cushioned bed next to her person’s couch,” Carolina told The Dodo. “One where she can go out for walks often and, over everything, one with so much love.”

Baguira hopes to land her forever home soon. Until then, she’ll keep soaking up all the attention she’s receiving from the one person who refused to leave her behind on the sidewalk.

“Baguira has so much love to give,” Carolina wrote.
