A group of friends were filming a video in the middle of the desert when, out of nowhere, they discovered a dog.
“There were no houses,” Emily Everett-Nelson, founder of Atlas Animal Rescue, said in a video for The Dodo. “I mean, it was miles.”
The group had no idea where the pup, later named Pretzel, had come from or how on earth she’d ended up there, but all she seemed to want was love and attention. She roamed around the set without a care in the world — then a few days later, the group began to hear tiny cries.
It was absolutely freezing in the desert, and the group knew Pretzel needed help. They contacted Everett-Nelson, who dropped everything to drive out there.
“I went over to this abandoned old ramp, and she had given birth underneath it,” Everett-Nelson said. “She was under there with almost a dozen babies … She let me pick up every puppy [and] put them all in the kennel in the car.”
Pretzel was instantly so sweet with her rescuers and seemed to know she and her puppies were finally safe. She was trying to be a good mom, but she had 10 puppies and wasn’t making enough milk to feed them due to being malnourished. Luckily, Everett-Nelson had an idea.
Her friend had a mama dog, Louise, who had recently given birth to 10 puppies as well. She brought Pretzel and her puppies to join Louise and hers — and soon, they were all one big blended family.
“She had milk for days,” Everett-Nelson said. “Once Louise entered into the picture, the puppies were so big and fat.”
After eight weeks of growing and thriving in their foster home, the little family was put up for adoption. All of the puppies got adopted super quickly — but none of them got more applications than Mama Pretzel.
“Everyone wanted Pretzel because she is just the best dog,” Everett-Nelson said. “Sometimes there’s just dogs you meet who have such old souls.”
Pretzel is now thriving in her forever home after putting her faith in the exact right people.
