Late last month, a group of workmen in Long Island, New York, were changing a water meter when they noticed something move deep in the meter well.
Concerned, the workmen contacted local wildlife rescuer Karenlynn Stracher for help.
Peering into the well, Stracher recorded her observations in a video on her phone. At first, the well simply looked like a dark hole. But then, Stracher zoomed in and saw an animal sitting at the bottom — a cottontail rabbit, all alone.
“When I first saw the rabbit, I felt awful,” Stracher told The Dodo. “Cottontail rabbits are extremely fragile creatures who can literally die from fear. I knew [he] was probably terrified, and time was of the essence.”
Stracher couldn’t believe the rabbit’s circumstances.
“In all the years I have been doing wildlife rescue, this is the first time I have had a situation like this,” Stracher said. “It is very uncommon for meter wells to be left uncovered and unattended.”
Eager to get the animal to safety, Stracher lowered a net and a catch pole into the well and began the tricky process of wrangling the anxious rabbit.
In time, Stracher secured the rabbit and pulled him back up into the light.
You can watch the rescue unfold in a video here:
With his paws back on the grass, the rabbit gratefully hopped away.
“Goodbye little rabbit!” Stracher wrote in a video of the rescue. “Stay safe!”
