Over the years, I had been thinking about one particular thing that echoed loudly within my inner animal rescuer: what makes a dog shut down in a shelter environment?
Some might say it’s a loud environment or confined spaces, but many canines have experienced those in their previous homes. Then, it hit me – it’s the loss of their owner!
Winnie, who had traveled all the way from Oak Park Animal Shelter to Michigan Humane, was one of those timid pups who needed some time to decompress.
She was shy, reserved, and brokenhearted, but many didn’t understand why… until one day.
The Most Unexpected Reunion
Winnie’s past was as vague as it could possibly be. She was labeled “stray” upon arrival and was quite anxious. The Michigan team immediately began working on this, knowing that it might take some time until Winnie became social again.
Winnie, however, took everyone by surprise. It took her only days to start revealing her true colors. Underneath her fear and possible trauma was a social butterfly – and a true companion!
Little by little, Winnie began to go on her daily outings and playdates in the front yard. Then, one day, a man noticed her!
He was walking by when Winnie’s striking look caught his attention. Could it be? Wait…
Moments into careful observation, the man realized it was Lisa – his missing dog!
“Winnie arrived at Michigan Humane as a stray. She became available for adoption and was outside playing at the shelter when someone came up and asked for more information about her…that “someone” was her owner,” the Michigan rescue wrote in the post.
The coincidence was truly unbelievable! Not in a thousand years could anyone expect that Winnie’s (now Lisa’s) owner would be at the right place – at the right time! But, it happened and Lisa’s history was finally explained.
According to her owner, she had gone missing six months ago. The two were on a trip visiting their friend about twenty miles from their home when he last saw her. And, then he saw her again!
After a few initial moments into their encounter, Lisa recognized her dad! Her anxiety and fear instantly vanished, and she went straight into her cuddle mode. It was truly heartwarming!
Lisa Is Home
According to the rescue, Lisa and her owner went home together that very same day.
“The two were reunited and Lisa went back home that very same day. We’re so glad these two found each other again,” Michigan Humane added.
Witnessing this adorable reunion was beyond words for everyone in the facility. It was a moment of pure love, tears, and joy, and the team decided to share it with their followers.
