Shelters are unfortunately full of sad dogs who have only one dream – a forever home. The most heartbreaking fact is that not every furry fellow will reach it.
Every day, stories come from shelters about the difficult fates of dogs who have been forgotten by everyone and who might have been better off if they had never come into this world.
However, among all of the unfortunate news, there are some stories with a happy ending that every die-hard dog lover likes to hear.
Today’s story is one such, which features a dog who had to watch his furry friends leave the shelter in Wintersville, Ohio, for almost 100 days.
Until, one day, his happiest moment finally came.
An Unwanted Title
A two-year-old Terrier mix named Octavius originally came to the Jefferson County Humane Society in Wintersville, Ohio, on May 13, 2024.
When he arrived there, he wasn’t in good condition as he suffered from Lyme disease, a bacterial illness that can be transmitted to dogs through certain ticks.
Fortunately, the big-hearted shelter employees did everything to help this dog, and they were eventually able to get the disease under control by using certain medications.
These people hoped that his adoption process would be as successful as that, but unfortunately, they were wrong. As the days passed, Octavius was “leaning against the cold bars” as he watched other dogs find their forever homes while he remained behind those same bars.
After 79 days spent in the shelter, even his recognizable smile began to fade, and Octavius fell more and more into depression.
“At just 2 years old, he is still young, with so much love left to give,” shelter wrote in a Facebook post from July 31. “Yet, the once vibrant boy is now showing signs of decline, with kennel sores marring his once pristine coat and his energy slowly fading.”
Just a few days later, he also took the unwanted title of the shelter’s longest resident from a dog that was adopted that day.
Nevertheless, despite all the hardships, these good people did not want to give up on Octavius at any cost.
Sun After A Long Rain
People from the shelter still didn’t stop posting Octavius’ pictures and stories about him on Facebook. They did everything to arouse as much interest as possible in adopting him.
“91 days is a long time for a well rounded and sweet boy like him. His adoption fee is even FULLY SPONSORED! We definitely recommend coming up to meet this fun-loving angel! ☀️❣️,” they wrote in their August 13 Facebook post.
That post was crucial because on the same day, a few hours later, the best possible news arrived – Octavius had finally found his forever family!
“Despite being overlooked, his loving personality finally caught the attention of a wonderful family who saw just how special he is,” the shelter wrote in their latest Facebook post. “Octavius is now off to a new adventure, surrounded by love and care, and he is jumping with joy!”
Finally, after all the difficulties and heartbreaks, the sun shone on Octavius. And all thanks to the big-hearted people who never once thought of giving up on this good boy.
It was the happy ending we all needed.
