Meet Frankie — a pit bull puppy whose story began in a Pampers diaper box. Back in April, Frankie was abandoned in the box, dumped curbside in Buffalo, New York. In need of help, little Frankie peeked his head out from his makeshift cardboard home, wondering if someone might notice him.
Eventually, a local business owner named Robin spotted Frankie outside her store. Robin, who’s a longtime supporter of West Side Cat Rescue, decided to contact the shelter for help, hopeful that the animal experts might rescue dogs, too.
When West Side Cat Rescue founder Jamie Mulligan got the call, she knew that Frankie being dumped outside Robin’s business probably wasn’t a coincidence.
“We suspect someone knew he would be taken care of and that Robin would do the right thing,” a representative from West Side Cat Rescue told The Dodo.
Though they specialize in cats, rescue staff refused to let Frankie fall to the wayside.
“Unfortunately, the local shelters here are full of pit bulls that no one wants to adopt, so Jamie knew she couldn’t bring him to an overcrowded shelter,” the representative said.
Staff members took Frankie to the vet and bought him some puppy food, a collar and a new leash.
Jamie’s daughter, who regularly helps out at the rescue, quickly agreed to foster Frankie. As time went on, Jamie’s daughter connected with Frankie and decided he needed a new name. She decided on Percy. By that point, it was clear to everyone that the two of them were meant to be.
“It’s now looking like [Jamie’s] daughter has become attached,” the representative said. “Percy is now a foster fail!”
Safe with his new mom, Percy’s life is so much brighter.
“[He] will never ever be abandoned in a box again,” West Side Cat Rescue wrote in a Facebook post. “He will only get the best moving forward!”
