When rescuers received a call about a stray dog struggling on the streets after giving birth, they wasted no time. She had been carrying her babies in her mouth, begging passersby for help. Determined to rescue the family, they set out to find her. She had taken refuge in a quiet corner, fiercely protective of her puppies. Understandably, she was nervous and hesitant as strangers approached. The rescuers, realizing they needed to gain her trust, returned to their car to grab some treats. Slowly and patiently, they reassured her with kind gestures and food.

Though cautious, hunger eventually encouraged her to accept the offering. This small breakthrough allowed them to get a closer look at her and her puppies. What they found was heartbreaking—her litter was struggling. The mama dog, despite her best efforts, was unable to provide what her babies needed. A closer inspection revealed a leash still around her neck, suggesting she had once been someone’s pet but was abandoned.

The rescuers gently separated her from the puppies to examine them, but the scene was heartwrenching. Only one puppy had survived. The devoted mother licked the others, desperately hoping they would wake up. Her sorrow was mirrored in the rescuers, who were sad and frustrated they couldn’t save them all.

Determined to help the mama dog and her sole surviving puppy, they took them to the shelter. There, the two began their recovery. Although their health was fragile, they were safe, warm, and finally receiving the care they needed.

Merida is a senior who was found abandoned in a backyard with her sibling who had passed away. She was left to fend for herself as an 11-year-old with diabetes. Thankfully, Kanoa Rescue Foundation stepped in to save her, but she still needs your help!

The following day, the rescuers welcomed two orphaned puppies into the shelter. Unsure if the grieving mama would accept them, they introduced the pair to her. To their joy, she instinctively took them under her wing, nursing them as if they were her own.

Even though the mother dog had been through the unthinkable, her loving heart and maternal instincts never changed. From the depths of despair, she became a hero to two orphaned pups, giving them the love and care they desperately needed. While it will take time before they are ready for adoption, there is no doubt these puppies will find loving homes—and the brave mama dog will, too.
