Furry Babies Abandoned Outside High School Run Up To Teacher For Help

A teacher named Yolanda at San Marcos High School in Texas was recently walking up to work when something completely unexpected stopped her in her tracks. Seemingly out of nowhere, five puppies ran up to her.

She rushed inside and asked her coworker, Belinda Peña, a senior administrative assistant at the school, for help. As soon as Peña saw the puppies, it became clear that they’d been abandoned. Someone had left them outside the school in a cardboard box, but they’d escaped it.

“They were like little scavengers just walking around, searching for food and water. They were really thirsty,” Peña told The Dodo.

The school teachers and staff worked together to get the puppies a drink and to help them cool off. Since this happened over the summer, when the staff has limited hours, it’s lucky that they were around to scoop up the puppies, who desperately needed their help.

“If not, who knows what would have happened?” Peña said.

While they waited for the animal control officer they’d called to arrive, everyone gushed over the babies.

“They were the cutest things. They had big old ears … Just happy little puppies,” Peña said.

One teacher decided to take one of the puppies home with her. Kay Lynn Dodd, a counselor at the school, took a particular interest in the remaining four. By the time the animal control officer arrived, she wasn’t sure if she could bear to part with them.

“The officer was like, ‘Well, it is the end of the day, I can’t guarantee somebody’s going to be able to be there at the shelter to intake them,'” Dodd told The Dodo. “And I [was] like, ‘I can’t have that on my conscience.'”

So she decided to foster them until someone is able to adopt them permanently. She got them their shots and microchips, then took them home with her.

In the month since they were abandoned at the school, they’ve been thriving.

“They have flourished. They are gaining weight. They’re growing,” Dodd said.

Dodd decided to name them Buttercup, Snickers, Bandit and Rotund. All four have proven to be mischievous and affectionate.

For anyone who’s interested in taking one or more of these puppies home, you can submit an online application to the San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter at this link. It’s important to Dodd that the babies end up in loving homes. After everything they’ve been through, they more than deserve it.
