Family Adopted Foster Dog Even When Vet ‘Cautioned’ That He’s Mentally Challenged

Every dog has its own unique personality, but Stanley, a Golden Retriever, stood out right from the beginning.

Adopted by a loving family from the Golden Retriever Rescue of Mid-Florida, Stanley’s quirks were apparent from day one, and while they were endearing, they were also a bit concerning.

When Stanley’s mom and dad first met him, they were introduced to a dog who was clearly different.

At his foster home, Stanley was found sleeping on the table—a behavior that immediately highlighted his quirky nature.

Despite these unusual habits, the family quickly fell in love with him and decided to bring him home.

Stanley fit right in with the family’s kids and other pets, showing his friendly and loving side. However, as time went on, his new owners became increasingly worried about his behavior.

They had successfully trained dogs before, but Stanley presented a unique challenge. He would often climb onto counters and tables, raising concerns that he might injure himself.

What puzzled the family even more was that Stanley, while not deaf, never responded to his name. They hired two different trainers to help, but both eventually quit, with one suggesting that Stanley might be mentally challenged.

This prompted the family to observe his behavior more closely, and they discovered something odd: Stanley had developed an obsessive-compulsive routine of gathering a slipper, a remote, and a stuffed animal together every day.

Curious about Stanley’s cognitive abilities, the family decided to put him through a dog IQ test they’d heard about from a friend.

Unfortunately, Stanley struggled with the tasks, failing to get out from under a blanket, respond to his name, or find a treat hidden under a cup.

The family’s vet later confirmed their suspicions, explaining that Stanley’s challenges could be due to inbreeding and stubbornness.

While they may never fully understand why Stanley behaves the way he does, his family has come to accept and love him for who he is.

Physically healthy and surrounded by a family who adores him, Stanley is living a happy life despite his quirks.

His owner summed it up perfectly, saying, “He may be a bit slow, but his silly quirks, good nature, and odd little personality make us love him even more.”

Stanley’s story is a beautiful reminder that every dog, regardless of their challenges, deserves love and happiness.

His family’s unwavering support and affection for him show that true love sees beyond imperfections—it embraces them.

Stanley may be a little different, but he’s found his perfect match in a family who cherishes him just the way he is.
