Dog with Health Issues Becomes His Brother’s Biggest Support

Grab your tissues and make sure the rest of your day is low-key because you’re about to handle a whirlpool of emotions. I know I have!

Sammy, a recently adopted dog into a beautiful Nevada home, leaves no soul indifferent. This Lab mix is a hero, an inspiration, and a motive to every single one of us to tackle our challenges to the best of our abilities.

A couple of years ago, Sammy’s health started to deteriorate. But, even that did not stop this good boy from making headlines nationwide, all thanks to his resilient spirit!

His New Family Made A Promise

Ruth Gentry and her son, Roan, experienced heartbreak when their two senior dogs (ages 15 and 17) passed away within three weeks of each other. They constantly sought comfort, yet nothing could fill that void.

Enter Sammy!

While scrolling through animal rescue pages searching for a new dog that could become her son’s best friend, Ruth’s attention was immediately drawn to this cute pup.

She and Roan drove to Sammy’s rescue, Churchill Animal Protection Society in Nevada, met him, and it was clear within minutes – he was just perfect! All of a sudden, Roan had a new best friend, and the family had the sweetest reason to smile again.

Sammy was a genuinely sweet dog.

He kissed Roan right on their first encounter, signaling the mountain of happy memories that lay ahead for this family. Ruth and Roan made a promise that this was forever. No matter what, Sammy, the pup, would be loved, cherished, and never abandoned.

Then, heartbreak unfolded.

During their daily playtime, Sammy slipped and developed a limp. But, as the vet exam later revealed, it was more than that!

“I took him to UC Davis and they found out he has congenitial patella luxation (floating knee cap) in both legs. This probably predisposed him to his injury in his left hind leg,” Ruth wrote on Facebook.

It was just heartbreaking. Due to her work schedule and daily chores, many friends suggested that Ruth give up Sam, as his medical treatments were time-consuming and costly!

But, Ruth and Roan made a promise. They didn’t want to leave their newly-adopted bud high and dry. Instead, Ruth enrolled him in UC Davis’ veterinary program, through which Sam’s condition was carefully monitored.

After two unsuccessful surgeries, the vet team determined that the best solution for Sammy was physical therapy, supported by a wheelchair. And, just like that – Sammy had a new life!

Over the next two years, Sammy fully embraced his new way of life. Although in a wheelchair, he didn’t seem to lose any spark he had when he initially arrived at his new home.

He still had his favorite activities, his all-time favorite human brother next to him, and endless cuddle sessions. Sammy even got prosthetic knee braces to help him move around the house.

Now, it was Sammy’s time to repay his family with endless smiles and provide comfort – and that’s exactly what he did!

Recently, Roan was diagnosed with dyslexia and signed up for a tutoring program. To overcome his difficulties, Sammy sits by his brother every day, providing the encouragement he needs.

In a way, Sammy anticipates when Roan is having a difficult time. As a response, he instantly goes into his “therapist mode” and calms his brother down

“Everyday Sammy is at my son’s side for his tutoring. When he comes exhausted from school and needs to lie down for a bit Sammy is there,” Ruth stated in an Instagram post.

Sammy is truly special. Although he’s not trained in therapy, he’s a natural caregiver. And, Ruth is considering training him one day!

“Sammy has a way about him that calms my son like nothing I have ever seen. This is why I know Sammy will make a great therapy dog someday maybe his mission is to work with kids,” Ruth added.

Until then, one thing is never changing – Sammy and Roan will remain best friends.
