When Shyan Noah, an avid animal rescuer in Arkansas, saw a Facebook post about a mama dog and her puppies who’d been dumped at an abandoned house, she immediately knew she had to help. Before she arrived, some other rescuers had tried to convince the mom dog to let them help her, but they hadn’t had any luck.

“Mama was not very friendly to anyone and wouldn’t let anyone get close,” Noah told The Dodo.

While mama was distracted, some of the rescuers were able to grab a few of the puppies, but they still had a long way to go. When Noah got there, her first priority was trying to win over Mama. She was hiding under the house, too scared to let anyone help her.

“I was able to gain Mama’s trust enough to let me feed her out of my hand and give her short little pets,” Noah said.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough, so the group of rescuers decided to set a trap for Mama — and finally, they got her.

Once Mama was safe, it took a few days for rescuers to find all of her puppies. They were scared and wary of people, so they hid under the abandoned house and did their best to avoid being caught, just like their mom had tried to do. Eventually, though, their rescuers outsmarted them.

Finally, the entire little family was safe.

“They were all covered in fleas and ticks,” Noah said. “They didn’t want to be touched and were pretty reactive but have quickly realized they are safe with us.”

The mama dog and her puppies are all doing well now, healing and growing in their foster home. The puppies are just as strong-willed as they were when they were hiding under the house and keep their foster family on their toes at all times.

“[They] are happy, healthy little escape artists,” Noah said. “They love squeezing through the gates of their foster room and into the rest of the house with everyone else.”

The family is now a part of Novastar Rescue, who will help them all find their forever homes as soon as possible.
