Last week, Stevens County Sheriff’s Deputy Wright was on patrol in a rural area in Washington state when something unusual caught his eye.
There, sitting all alone on the side of the forest-lined road, was a dog. In her eyes was a look of concern.
Initially, Wright assumed she was lost. He was wrong.
“Wright tried to get the dog into his vehicle so he could attempt to find the owner,” the sheriff’s office wrote. “But the dog would not get in his vehicle.”
Suspecting that the dog’s owner may, in fact, have been close by, Wright ventured through the surrounding forest to look, but to no avail.
The worried dog, meanwhile, remained in the road for the deputy to return — and that’s when the mystery began to unravel.
“[Wright] tried to get the dog off the roadway, and [she] took off up a slightly travelled, unmarked roadway,” the sheriff’s office wrote. “Wright followed the dog, and [she] led him to a small summer cabin. He began checking around the area and observed an elderly male lying on the ground calling for help a short distance from the cabin.”
The man’s faithful canine companion, named Gita, had saved the day.
Gita’s owner, who is 84 years old, had injured himself in a fall and was unable to move. Without her help, he may never have gotten the help he needed.
“He had laid there for hours and may have had serious consequences if he had not been found,” the sheriff’s office wrote, adding:
“We credit Gita for saving his life that day. The loyalty and heroism of our furry friends never cease to amaze us.”
