The other day, a woman in Los Angeles, California, witnessed a heartbreaking scene. She watched as a weeping family tied their German shepherd-Malinois mix to a tree in an empty parking lot, placed a bag of food beside her and put a muzzle around her snout before walking away.
The family members were visibly sad, but the dog became inconsolable as she watched them walk away.
“When you think your heart can’t break anymore, and then you see this,” Suzette Hall, founder of Logan’s Legacy 29, wrote on Facebook. “She didn’t know she would never see them again.”
The dog, later named Melody, tried to follow her family, but she remained tethered to the tree, defenseless and defeated. That’s when the accidental witness, Bridget Blitsch, stepped in.
“All I can say is [an] angel was watching over her because Bridget Blitsch just happened to be there at the right time,” Hall wrote. “She stayed with her and was frantically trying to find a place for her to go.”
Blitsch contacted Hall, who dropped everything and raced to the scene. When she arrived, the experienced rescuer was overcome with emotion.
“She was crying, Bridget was crying, I was crying,” Hall wrote. “If Bridget wasn’t at the right place at the right time, [Melody] would probably still be sitting there tied to the tree, wondering where they went.”

Luckily, the sweet girl had two new friends who refused to leave her behind. Hall untied Melody from the tree and loaded her into the car after giving her a big, comforting hug.
Hall’s heart broke for Melody and her family. She got some information about the family and learned they had to make an impossible decision.
“They became homeless, and the shelter they are staying at said it’s either the dog or the shelter they would need to leave because dogs weren’t allowed there,” Hall wrote. “This sweet little baby didn’t deserve this.”
While hugging Melody, Hall noticed something draped around the dog’s neck. Blitsch then shared a devastating detail about the pup’s abandonment.
“The kids had put a necklace on her when they said goodbye,” Hall wrote in a Facebook update. “I put the necklace on my seat after I dropped her at my vet, and I looked over, and it had formed a heart by itself.”
Despite how they’d left her, Hall knew Melody’s family truly loved her and didn’t want to abandon her. She wished Melody could’ve stayed with her family but promised to find her another loving home as soon as possible.
It’s been a little over a week since Melody’s rescue, and the sweet pup is doing better than ever. She’s still recovering from the trauma of being left behind, but her rescuers are working hard to heal her emotional wounds.
“She’s still so sad and so confused,” Hall wrote. “She’s so sweet and is craving love … any love she can get.”
Melody’s foster family continues to shower her with love daily, and she’s striving towards emotional healing. It’s hard to know the sweet pup’s past, but Hall is confident she has a bright future.
“We love you, sweetheart,” Hall wrote. “We won’t break that pinky promise.”
