The other day, police officers in St. Louis, Missouri, stumbled upon a heartwrenching scene during a quiet afternoon shift. A sweet dog who’d been hit by a car was lying on the side of the road, and no one had stopped to help her.
The sweet girl, alert and scared, swiveled her head in search of Good Samaritans. She breathed a deep sigh of relief when she saw the police slam on their brakes and rush to her side.
The police officers created a safe barrier to protect the dog, later named Joy Bird, from oncoming cars. They sat beside her and petted her head while waiting for Stray Rescue of St. Louis’ (SRSL) rescue team to arrive.
A car full of SRSL volunteers soon pulled up, and their hearts skipped a beat when they saw the adorable pit bull mix staring up at them. They weren’t sure of the extent of her injuries, but they promised the loving girl and the officers caring for her that she would be OK.
The team carefully lifted Joy Bird off the street, then loaded her into their car. They soon arrived at SRSL’s veterinary clinic, and a team of medical personnel took over her care.
They examined Joy Bird’s injuries, and, while they discovered a broken hip, they were pleased to see that her injuries weren’t as severe as they could’ve been.
“It is going to take her time to heal with lots of crate rest, but she should be able to make a full recovery in time,” SRSL wrote on Facebook.
The vet staff scheduled hip surgery for the following dayJoy Bird and tucked her into bed for the night. The following day, they woke up to an adorable sight.
“Her eyes are a lot softer today,” SRSL wrote on Facebook. “She knows she’s in a good, safe place with good people.”
Joy Bird’s emergency surgery was successful, and the resilient girl was soon on the mend. She wasn’t able to use her back legs for some time after recovery, but her best friends at SRSL made sure her temporary paralysis didn’t hold her back.
The made accommodations for Joy Bird, like putting her in a stroller for walks, and she couldn’t have been more thankful.
“She loves going out in her stroller and feeling the sun,” SRSL wrote on Facebook. “[She’s] such a sweet girl.”
A few weeks after her surgery, Joy Bird was finally strong enough to go to a foster home. She quickly found an amazing foster family, whom she’s been with since.
Joy Bird’s still on the hunt for a forever home, but the grateful pup is thrilled to have a pair of loving foster parents in the meantime.
The staff at SRSL hope to find Joy Bird’s perfect match soon. Until then, they’ll keep enjoying updates from her foster family about her amazing improvements.
“We didn’t realize we gave her the perfect name when we rescued her off the side of the road,” SRSL wrote on Facebook. “She is such an angel.”
