A construction worker was hard at work on a site in Virginia when he suddenly heard tiny cries coming from a nearby dumpster. His heart sank, and he rushed over to confirm his very sad suspicions.
“He looked inside to find a dog food bag with four newborn brown and white puppies [inside],” Appomattox Animal Shelter told The Dodo. “They were cold to the touch.”
The construction worker knew the puppies needed help as soon as possible and contacted animal control. An officer came out to collect them and transfer them into the care of Appomattox Animal Shelter, who quickly got to work giving them the care they needed.
“We took them to warm them and feed them,” the shelter said. “They still had their eyes and ears closed, with umbilical cords attached.”
The shelter named the puppies Jane Margolis, Walter White, Saul Goodman and Gus Fring after characters from the hit show “Breaking Bad.” After examining them, the shelter determined they’d only been born 24 hours beforehand and were therefore very lucky to be OK.
“Considering how young these puppies were and taken away from Mom so soon, they were in very good condition,” the shelter said. “They took right to bottle feeding and were able to be warmed up fairly quickly.”
The puppies were soon taken in by an experienced foster family and are now thriving. They’ve been transferred into the care of the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA and will stay safe and sound in their foster home until they’re old enough to go off and find their forever homes.
