Celebrating Shelter Dogs: Dogust 1st Marks Special Birthdays for Pups in Need

Every dog deserves a birthday, but for shelter pups, their special day is often unknown. In 2008, The North Shore Animal League America, the world’s largest no-kill animal rescue and adoption organization, came up with the perfect solution. They declared August 1st the Universal Birthday for all Shelter Dogs.

DOGust 1 is just around the corner. Here’s what you need to know to celebrate in style!

The Meaning Of DOGust 1st

Shelter workers can estimate a dog’s age, but even they can’t pinpoint the very day they were born. Many adopters celebrate their pup’s Gotcha Day each year after their rescue, but for those still waiting in the shelter, DOGust 1st serves as a universal day of celebration.

North Shore Animal League America (NSALA) works with shelters across the country to promote adoption and acceptance of shelter dogs on this date. The goal is to show them they are special and worthy, even if they are yet to find the perfect home.

As NSALA states:

3 Reasons To Love DOGust 1st

1. This day encourages adoptions.

Shelter dogs have an unlimited supply of love and affection to give. DOGust 1st encourages the public to see them in a positive light as they celebrate with their furry friends.

2. Shelter dogs have their day.

DOGust 1st celebrates America’s less privileged pups — and all the people who actively work to make their lives safe, happy, and healthy.

3. It’s one big party!

A birthday bash for millions of adopted dogs all on the same day? That’s a lot of cake and ice cream for the humans — and pup-cakes for the dogs.

3 Great Ways To Celebrate DOGust 1st

1. Donate your time to a shelter.

While monetary donations are helpful, shelters always need more volunteers. This DOGust, contact your local shelter for information on ways to help.

2. Spoil your adopted canine.

If you have an adopted dog, spoil them rotten! A plush bed or a longer-than-usual day at the park. Anything to show your furry friend how much you care.

3. Make it a Complete Dog Day.

Shelters can always use dog toys, supplies, food, leashes, and much more to help them tend to dogs in need. Consider donating supplies — and maybe throw in a little something for the humans, too!
