Sisters Aria and Grace Keilbach, cofounders of Boonie Babies animal rescue, were driving through a remote area on the Western Pacific island Saipan when they saw a dog jump into the road.
Concerned, the sisters got out of their car to investigate. They offered the dog a bowl of food, which she seemed too agitated to stop and eat. She started walking toward the trees bordering the road, and the sisters decided to follow her.
“I trail her a little more, and she ducks sideways into the jungle,” Aria told The Dodo.
The mama dog led the two women to a secret she’d been guarding: her litter of five puppies. She’d been taking care of them all by herself in the middle of the forest.
While the mama dog had been doing her best to raise her babies, left without food or shelter, the puppies were not doing well.
“They’re covered in fleas and ticks, and their bellies were super, super swollen, which means that they’re full of worms,” Aria said.
The dogs seemed to sense that Aria and Grace were there to help them.
“I tried to walk back to the car to get some supplies, and they wouldn’t stop following me,” Aria said.
The dog rescuers tried to grab all the babies as well as their mama, but the adult dog didn’t let the women anywhere near her. Aria and Grace had to make the heartbreaking decision to take the puppies and leave the mama behind.
“[W]e knew that if we left them even for a day or two, that they would not make it,” Aria said.
Bright and early the next morning, the sisters returned to get the mama. Luckily, they found her almost right away.
They offered her food, but she had no interest in it. All she seemed to care about was getting back to her puppies. She jumped right through Aria’s open car window and rode in the front seat back to the shelter.
The sisters wasted no time reuniting the mama with her babies. When the little family was together again, their tails would not stop wagging.
One by one, each and every one of the puppies and their mama got adopted into permanent, loving homes.
Thanks to the mama’s bravery in asking two strangers for help, her family is safe and happy now.
