A biker was out for a ride on a quiet lane in Alrewas, England, enjoying the scenery, when something caught their eye that made them do a double take. Tied to a gate with no one else around were four fluffy puppies, waiting for help.
It didn’t seem like the pups were supposed to be there, so the biker made the decision to contact the RSPCA, who immediately sent someone out to collect them.
“It was heartbreaking to see the condition of these dogs,” Graeme Brookes, an inspector with the RSPCA, told The Dodo. “They were cold, wet, shivering and very scared, and had probably been left there in the early hours.”
Brooks began carefully loading the dogs into his van. Even though they were incredibly scared, it was also clear that they were so ready to finally be safe.
“One of them was so terrified that she couldn’t walk on a lead,” Brooks said. “I had to carry her to my van, and while she was in my arms, she locked eyes with me and wouldn’t look away. When we arrived at the vet, she wouldn’t leave me.”
The puppies’ fur was all extremely matted and covered in sawdust, and therefore they all had to be shaved down. Other than that, they were luckily in good condition and had no other issues that needed tending to.
All four puppies were 10-month-old female cockapoos. While they were microchipped, the information was out of date, and the RSPCA is currently investigating where they might have come from. In the meantime, the puppies are doing well and being cared for at an emergency boarding facility.
“We really want to find out what happened to these poor abandoned cockapoos,” Brooks said.
Regardless of where they came from, the puppies are safe now, thanks to their rescuers and a kind biker.
