Biker Rescues Abandoned Puppy Found in Woods

A few months ago, Scott Bishop was riding his bike up to Mount Baldy, a small village in California. As he was making his way through the forest, he spotted a black streak out of the corner of his eye.

Pacing back and forth on the side of the road, there was a scared puppy. He was clearly lost — there was no one else around.

“It’s miles from the closest civilization,” Hailey Jordan Bishop, Scott’s wife, told The Dodo.

Since he was on a bike, there was nothing Scott could do to help the puppy. The road he was on was closed to cars that day, so he just had to hope the dog would stay put until he could come back for him.

The next morning, Scott and Hailey got up at 5 a.m. and drove back to the spot where Scott had spotted the dog. At first, they couldn’t find him. But then, they caught a glimpse of him hiding in a bush.

“I just kind of saw these two eyeballs looking out,” Hailey said.

The couple suspected he’d been abandoned.

“We’ve heard that it’s a puppy dumping spot,” Hailey said. “I think he was sadly put there.”

Scott and Hailey coaxed him into their car and took him home, where they saw his true loving nature start to emerge as his fear wore off.

“I feel like the biggest change in his personality when we got him was how quickly he jumped into puppy mode,” Hailey said.

The puppy got along with their dog right away and settled into a routine of playing, lounging around and going on long walks.

The Bishops took him to see a vet, who confirmed he was in good health and that he didn’t have a microchip.

The couple told Scott’s parents about the dog they’d rescued from the woods. To their surprise, his parents fell in love with him immediately and took an interest in adopting him. All it took was a few Zoom calls with him for them to know he was going to be the perfect addition to their family.

“[T]hey were like, ‘OK. He’s ours. He’s our dog,’” Hailey said.

The Bishops embarked on a 15-hour road trip with the pup in tow to transport him from California to Colorado, where Scott’s parents live. Along the way, they got to have a fun hotel sleepover all together before saying goodbye.

As soon as Scott’s parents met the dog, they knew they’d made the right decision. They decided to name him Bonez. Bonez settled into his new home quickly, grateful to have been rescued by such a big, loving family.

“It seems like it was fate that … we found him a home and it’s in the family, so we’ll be seeing him the rest of his life,” Hailey said.
