Last month, a woman in Troy, Alabama, was taking her trash to the dumpster outside her apartment complex when she noticed strange squealing noises coming from the large metal bin. With help from an apartment manager, the woman inspected the dumpster and found the source of the noise — a mysterious, taped-up cardboard box.
Tearing open the box, the pair finally saw who was squealing. Huddled inside were five puppies, just barely 3 weeks old.
Horrified, the woman reached out to Troy Animal Rescue Project for help.
“We honestly couldn’t believe it,” Troy Animal Rescue Project director Tiffany Howington told The Dodo. “Seeing the puppies really tore us up.”
The poor dogs were burning up from the heat of the trash can. Rescuers quickly moved the puppies indoors. Once comfortable, the dogs gulped formula from bottles, grateful to have sustenance again.
Though the odds were stacked against them, in the weeks since their rescue, the puppies have proven their resilience.
“All five puppies are recovering amazingly well,” Troy Animal Rescue Project wrote in a Facebook post. “They are eating like champs and gaining weight. Our vet thinks they will make full recoveries and grow into beautiful, healthy dogs.”
Howington is grateful to everyone who’s donated to help care for these wayward puppies. She’s positive that, from now on, these puppies won’t have anything to worry about.
“They will have a wonderful future with great, loving homes,” she said.
