Adorable Golden Retriever Had To Call In Some Backup After His Hiking Adventure Gone Wrong

We all know how active dogs are.

Whether it’s a trip to the dog park or a walk around the block, your furry friend will always be up for the adventure.

So, when one hooman decided to go on a hike, taking his pup and one of his doggo friends came as the most logical idea ever.

As the happy trio set out on their adventure, they had no idea that in order to complete it, they would need to call reinforcements.

It’s Adventure Time

While walking the breathtaking paths of the Franconia Ridge Loop in New Hampshire, the adorable trio was having the time of their lives.

The Golden Retriever by the name of Crosby completed the fifth mile out of a nine-mile hike without any issues. However, as they were closing the sixth one, the pup’s owner noticed that Crosby started getting tired.

The hooman decided to immediately take a break, allowing his furry companion to take a breather. After some time, they were able to close another mile but were forced to call it quits when they noticed that Crosby began suffering from exhaustion and soft-tissue injuries on his paw pads.

“The weather was stable, but Crosby’s owner lacked lighting, enough gear to stay comfortable, and did not have canine evacuation supplies,” wrote the NH Paw Rescue in a Facebook post.

Not wanting to further injure his pup, the owner contacted the New Hampshire Paw Rescue and informed them of the situation.

The rescue staff, along with a number of volunteers, dropped everything they were doing and immediately hiked up to the trio.

When they finally got to Crosby, they carefully loaded him up on a rigid ladder and carried him down the trail to the finish line.

“Crosby’s paws were bandaged, covered by booties and he jumped into his owner’s vehicle to rest and head home,” they added.

Crosby’s owner took the two furry friends home and promised that first thing in the morning, his adorable pup would receive veterinary care.

Always Be Prepared

Following this rescue, the NH Paw Rescue decided to remind their locals how important it is to be prepared for instances like this one.

“The Franconia Ridge Loop is a difficult almost 9-mile hike, climbs from 1800’ to over 5200’ [of elevation], is exposed to the elements for long stretches, and has a very rocky footing. These factors, combined with warmer than average September temperatures, proved to be too much for a large golden retriever like Crosby,” they wrote.

They also stated that if you do decide to go hiking up the White Mountains, you should bring the right equipment and supplies. These include a map, protective clothing, a headlamp, some food, and a first aid kit.

If you are planning on taking your furry friend along, then also consider bringing a rescue harness, bandages, pet wraps, and paw booties.“Carefully check paw pads frequently, and address any paw pad damage before it gets worse. Keep in mind that dogs don’t often show early signs of paw distress (as many owners expect) and may only exhibit symptoms when it is severe,” they stated.
