Annie Walton hadn’t meant to return home from her study abroad trip to Turks and Caicos with anything other than memories and perhaps a few seashells.
But when she saw a little black ball of fur sprinting across the beach, the animal lover knew what she had to do.
“She just ran out towards us like, ‘Hey! Could you help me?’” Walton said in a video for The Dodo. “So I was like, ‘I wanna take you home.’”
Safe with Walton, the puppy, now named Midge, began to relax and open up.
“You could tell she was so much more comfortable once we took her in,” Walton said.
Walton made accommodations to bring Midge with her on a plane home to Illinois. Brave Midge had no problem being in the sky.
“The entire flights, she was just sleeping peacefully,” Walton said.
Back stateside, Walton introduced Midge to her parents’ two other dogs, Millie and Artie. Millie and Midge immediately took a liking to each other.
The weeks passed, and Midge got bigger and bigger. Soon, she was big enough to hold her own while playing with Millie, and she didn’t want to do anything else.
“They do everything together,” Walton said. “It’s so funny because their dynamic is very much big sister, little sister.”
Now that Midge is finally where she belongs, the growing pup doesn’t have to worry about being left behind.
“I love knowing that she found her place in this weird, quirky jumble of a family that I have,” Walton said.
