Playful Dog Becomes Shy Pup After Waiting 1,700 Days At Shelter For Someone To Adopt Him

JP was an adorable pup who made sure that his owner had the best day every day!

They would spend every moment together, having fun and making unforgettable memories. Unfortunately, when JP’s owner was deployed into the military, they didn’t have anybody who was able to take this adorable pup into their care.

Thus, JP was taken in by the lovely hoomans at the Bideawee Animal Shelter, an animal rescue based in New York City, where he remained for the next 1700 days!

Even though he came to the shelter as an active and happy dog who showered everybody with love and adoration, five years at the shelter really did take its toll on this happy boy.

Neverending Stay

When JP first arrived at the New York City shelter, he was eager to meet all of his new furry friends and fellow humans. However, as the years went by, JP’s energy level significantly decreased.

He also became very careful with all of the new friends he would meet, taking some extra time to open up to them.

“…This is a normal response to the instability of a shelter environment. He’s just a bit more wary of strangers. Despite this bit of stranger danger, he loves his Bideawee caretakers. While he enjoys the attention and care he receives, the shelter is no substitute for a loving home,” Melissa Treuman, senior director of development and communication, at Bideawee told The Dodo

When this sweet boy is around hoomans he knows, he turns into an absolute lovebug!

JP loves to receive all the cuddles and belly rubs he can, and don’t get me started on all the treats! Whenever the staff offers him a yummy snack, he eats it up in a single bite!

He also absolutely adores going outside and exploring nature. He happily follows his hoomans wherever they go and is down to do every activity they throw at him.

Still Looking For A Home

Even though it does take some time for him to open up to you, when he does, you are guaranteed the best time ever!

“One of our volunteers is so fond of him that she visits him on her lunch break from work every single day — and has for years,” Treuman said.

JP’s newfound shyness isn’t the only thing that is keeping him from getting adopted. Unfortunately, his size also plays a part.

“New data from Hill’s Pet Nutrition’s State of Shelter Pet Adoption Report shows that while 66 percent of people said they’re likely to adopt a dog from a shelter, only 24 percent of people said they are likely to adopt a large dog. That is fewer than 1 in 4 people. According to Shelter Animals Count, large dogs have experienced a doubled length of stay since 2019,” she said.

But despite all of these obstacles, JP refuses to give up hope!

He knows that his perfect home is somewhere out there and he is determined to find it. His shelter friends also decided to back him up by covering his adoption fees as well as offering his adopters a year’s worth of Science Diet Senior Vitality dog food.

Since he is an older boy, JP would do best in a quiet home without younger kids or other pets.

His heart is full of love and he is more than ready to give it to his new family. JP is a kind soul who will make every home burst with happiness and laughter if only he gets a chance.
