The Dog with the Saddest Eyes Finally Finds Hope

Earlier this month, staff members at Main Line Animal Rescue (MLAR) in Chester Springs, Pennsylvania, were walking through rows of kennels when they locked eyes with a particularly devastating scene. A long-term shelter pup named Rosa was splayed on her bed, and she looked completely dejected.

“We stood outside her kennel and watched her staring back at us with something beyond sadness,” MLAR wrote in a Facebook post. “It was the kind of quiet resignation you see when a dog stops believing.”

Rosa arrived at the shelter when she was just a puppy. For two years, she’s waited patiently for someone to take her home. So far, no one’s been interested.

“We are the only place and the only family she’s ever known,” MLAR wrote. “She has celebrated two birthdays in our shelter, surrounded by walls that she is starting to feel will never open for her.”

MLAR staff and volunteers know that there’s a different side to Rosa, a joyful side, a side they much prefer to see.

“She is at her happiest in the fields, playing with her big, squeaky, soft toys!” a representative from MLAR told The Dodo. “She always loves her visits to the office in the morning. She will stop at the door, telling her friends who are walking her that she has to make a pit-stop in to see all her favorite staff friends. She has a little nub tail, and it wiggles with such pure joy whenever she is with her friends and getting attention!”

So why is Rosa still at the shelter? Maybe it’s because she doesn’t stand out, or maybe people are intimidated by her size or energy level. Whatever the case, it’s clear that these people are missing out on a best friend.

“Dogs like Rosa, who are loyal, intelligent and deeply loving, often just need the right person to look beyond the first impression and see their true, wonderful selves,” the representative said. “Sadly, the longer they wait, the more invisible they can become — but that doesn’t mean they’re any less deserving of love.”

MLAR staff think Rosa would be happiest with a dog-savvy family, ideally one with experience taking care of larger breeds. Rosa would love to be in a family with adults or older teens, and would appreciate being the only dog, at least to start, so that she can adjust to home life.

Rosa’s supporters at the shelter dream of a day when the pup finds someone who understands and loves her. They hope Rosa will soon be enjoying a life spent lounging in a cozy home and going on adventures.

“She’s waited long enough for her happy ending,” the representative said. “We just hope the right person finds her soon!”
