Last week, a volunteer at a Houston-based dog shelter named Madeline came across two skinny puppies she couldn’t look away from. They were nearly identical-looking brothers, who moved completely in unison.
Together, the dogs pressed their paws against the bars of their kennel, desperately trying to get anyone’s attention.

“These two are peas in a pod,” Madeline wrote on Instagram. “They did everything together.”
Then, Madeline realized something heartbreaking: The dogs were both on the euthanasia list. If someone didn’t get them out of the shelter within the next few hours, they weren’t going to make it. Madeline posted a video of the dogs on Instagram, hoping someone would help.
Thankfully, a frequent dog foster mama named Summer saw the video and knew she had to help. Summer, who preferred to have her last name omitted, reached out to Sunnyside Street Dogs to see if they had room for two dogs who needed a place to stay.

Even though Sunnyside Street Dogs’ intake was closed, they knew they couldn’t say no. Summer agreed to foster the pups, and Sunnyside Street Dogs set the puppies up with all the supplies they needed.
“They’re just adorable,” Annie Hawthorne, president of Sunnyside Street Dogs, told The Dodo. “They’re like little twinsies. Their mannerisms are the same.”
While the pups, named Bennie and Jett, were so emaciated that the original shelter thought they were 10 weeks old, they’re actually closer to 6 or 7 months old. But now that they’ve been with Summer for a little over a week, they’re growing bigger and stronger every day.
“They’re playing with each other, running around, chewing on their toys,” Summer told The Dodo. “They’re very active.”
As similar as they are, Summer has been enjoying getting to know their unique quirks.
“Bennie and Jett really balance each other out,” Summer said. “Jett has a laid-back, cuddlebug personality, whereas Bennie has a vivacious, outgoing personality. I’m just very grateful that Sunnyside tagged them so they were able to be pulled from [the shelter].”
Now, all Bennie and Jett need is a forever home. Once they’re fully vetted and neutered, they’ll be available for adoption through Sunnyside Street Dogs.
“I just want someone who is patient, loving and that will adopt them together and keep them together forever … and not want to give them up for any reason at all,” Summer said. “[Someone who] will treat them like a family member.”
Bennie and Jett have been through thick and thin together, and now, all they want is to spend the rest of their lives playing and relaxing together.
