Berenice is a beloved little dog who lives in a beach town in Brazil with her owner, Xermar Edson. Visiting the pair at home, one might think Berenice and Edson are inseparable.
“If I lie down in bed, she lies down. If I sit on the couch, she sits too. If I go into the bathroom, she follows,” Edson told The Dodo. “She’s always by my side when we’re in the house — but when we’re out, it’s different.”
Very different.
When the pair steps out the front door together for a stroll down to the beach, the little dog’s clinginess quickly fades.
“Berenice likes to walk ahead by herself,” Edson said. “She goes to local shops where she’s made friends. She runs in the sand and plays with other dogs.”
Away from home, it might seem like Edson is the last person on Berenice’s mind — but even when he’s out of sight, there’s an invisible bond that ties them still.
Edson has come to accept Berenice’s adventurousness when they’re out and about, knowing that he can summon her to his side at a moment’s notice.
All he has to do is whistle — and even from a great distance away, the little dog comes running.
“Berenice is a rocket,” Edson said, sharing this video of her in action:
“At first, a friend suggested training techniques to make Berenice stay with me when we were out, but I ended up choosing to let her be the way she is,” Edson said. “I ended up using the whistle to call her even without knowing where she was. I would just start whistling and she would suddenly appear.”
Here’s another video of Berenice rocketing back after hearing Edson’s whistle:
Fortunately, most people in town are aware of Berenice’s love of wandering, and look out for her safety and well-being when Edson’s not immediately at hand.
They know he’s always just a whistle away.
“Berenice is only out when I’m there, too,” Edson said. “When I go home, I always take her with me.”
And until their next outing, she never leaves his side.
