Life’s most breathtaking moments often occur when you least expect them. Mary Smith and her mom know this better than anyone. The mother-daughter pair were recently out running an errand when they spotted a one-of-a-kind pup named Shugy.
“[We] were at this Dollar General and we see this poor dog,” Smith said in a video for The Dodo. “She had this big ‘ol belly.”
The women eventually went home. But as the evening wore on, they realized that Shugy’s situation stuck with them.
“We couldn’t stop thinking about her,” Smith wrote in a TikTok video.
The very next morning, they decided they’d go back and look for her. At first, they didn’t see anyone. But then, they spotted her familiar face in the distance. They opened their car door, and the pregnant dog gratefully leaped inside, eager for affection.
“Even through her fear, she was being the absolute sweetest girl,” Smith wrote.
The women gave Shugy a bath and set up a comfy bed for her. Shugy dozed off into the deep, restful sleep she’d clearly been craving.
“She just slept for, like, 24 hours straight,” Smith said.
Five days later, Shugy felt much more comfortable in her new home. She enjoyed running around the yard with her new dog siblings and playing with her toys. Now, all that was left to do was wait for her puppies to come.
Smith, who’d been visiting, reluctantly returned home, insisting that her mom send constant updates. It was only a matter of days before Smith got a FaceTime call — Shugy’s puppies were here, all seven of them.
“I got down there as soon as I could to see all the babies,” Smith said.
In the early days of puppyhood, the new family happily snored and bonded in relative peace. In time, the puppies got bigger and developed personalities. Then the shenanigans began.
“It was just chaos,” Smith said.
Smith and her mom each kept one puppy. They decided that Mama Shugy would stay with their family as well. Smith dilligently used her TikTok following to locate great homes for all the rest. The little ones — now named Gabe, Dobby, Banks, Huey, Summer, Gigi and Marley — are all living their best lives.
“The babies are so loved, and were able to find their homes, thanks to the power of our TikTok family,” Smith wrote in a video. “Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”
It’s clear that Smith and her mom will hold this rescue story in their hearts forever.
“I’ll never forget this, it was such a monumental experience,” Smith said. “We really feel like they were meant to be in our lives.”
