Stray Dog Found Disoriented—Rescuers Stunned by the Reason Why

Hashbrown was found wandering alone on the island of Maui looking extremely confused and disoriented. He had no microchip or collar and seemed well and truly lost. Maui Humane Society took him in and immediately discovered why he was so confused.

Hashbrown was completely blind.

After a medical exam, it was determined that Hashbrown had been born blind. Someone had abandoned him knowing he would have to wander the world in darkness. Poor Hashbrown had no idea what was going on and was so lucky he was found when he was. His rescuers spread the word about him and waited to see if anyone would come looking for him, but no one did.

Luckily, Hashbrown quickly settled into shelter life, refusing to let his blindness hold him back from living life to the fullest. He bonded with every dog and human he met and was eager to tackle every challenge in front of him. Unfortunately, Maui Humane was facing an overcapacity crisis, and they quickly realized they didn’t have the space for a special dog like Hashbrown.

“Maui Humane has now reached critical capacity,” Kendall Schulz, adoption services director at Helen Woodward Animal Center, told The Dodo. “Not only are they still feeling the effects from the wildfires last year, but, with tourism and local population down, adoptions are desperately low. Even more tragically, Maui Humane had been transferring animals to LA, but with the fires that took place there, they had to stop.”

When Helen Woodward Animal Center, located in San Diego, stepped up to help Maui Humane Society, they immediately agreed to take in Hashbrown.

“Hashbrown was the first dog they mentioned,” Schulz said. “They all love him and they knew he deserved a loving home, but a special needs dog doesn’t stand a chance at a facility struggling with adoption numbers.”

Soon, Hashbrown was on a flight from Maui to San Diego, and as soon as he arrived, he was placed into a loving foster home, where he’s already made fast friends with everyone who lives there.

“He is as wonderful as they described,” Schulz said. “We are so grateful to get this opportunity to find him the family he deserves. Dogs amaze us over and over again. They remind us how to live. If you want to know what [resilience] and kindness looks like, come meet Hashbrown.”

Hashbrown is looking for a forever family who live in a one-story home and would be willing to make simple accommodations to make Hashbrown’s life a little easier. The rescue will provide support to his forever family to make sure they’re all set to care for a special needs pup.

Despite being abandoned and not being able to see the world around him, Hashbrown is a beautiful, resilient soul with so much love to give. He just wants to find the right family to give it all to.
