The reality of the dog world is truly sad as so many of our canine friends are ending up behind the bars of dark and cold kennels. 

Once they go to the shelter, they are not the same dogs anymore as this place affects every aspect of their lives — from physical and mental health to their deepest emotions. 

However, because dogs are creatures of hope, they always search for a bit of light in the sea of darkness. That’s what one dog did when she ended up in a shelter in Skokie, Illinois. 

She established a truly special friendship that fueled her with the energy to continue living — until heartbreak happened. 

Friendship That Kept Her Alive

A dog named Misty came to Community Animal Rescue Effort (CARE) a few months ago from another shelter in rural Missouri. The previous kennel took a tool on her and the staff could not find a way to get her adopted. 

That’s why they decided to transfer her to this shelter in Skokie, Illinois, hoping that there, she would have better luck finding a forever home. 

Unfortunately, although the shelter employees tried their best to find a permanent solution for Misty, they were unsuccessful, and the poor dog fell into depression again. 

She was in a foster home a few times, but that did not lead her to a forever one. For the shelter staff, it was especially heartbreaking to see how much better Misty felt when she was in a home compared to the kennel. 

Poor Misty was suffering the most and she was desperately trying to find something that would lift her up to survive these difficult moments. She didn’t find something, but she did find someone — another shelter dog named Peachy with whom she soon became best friends. 

Misty and Peachy met one day when they were both participating in a play session intended precisely for the dogs to get to know each other and socialize so that they could spend their time in the shelter more comfortably.

When it came to these two, it was an instant connection, and soon they became inseparable. Their incredible friendship was one of the most beautiful things in the whole shelter. 

Although everyone wanted these dogs to find forever homes as soon as possible, deep down they all hoped that this friendship would last as long as possible in their shelter. 

Unfortunately, a heartbreak for one of them soon happened. 

Her Heart Broke Into Pieces

It was supposed to be a happy day in the shelter when Peachy was adopted by a loving family, but unfortunately, that was not the case. 

Although this dog finally met her happy ending, at the same time, one heart was broken into pieces. Misty lost her best friend, and thus, lost the only being in the shelter that truly kept her alive. 

People from the shelter were so sad because of this turn of events that they even decided to post a video on TikTok that featured this heartbreak.

“While at the shelter, she made a best friend,” they wrote. “And then her best friend got adopted. Now she is all alone again 💔.”

In the days that followed, the distinctive sparkle in Misty’s eyes disappeared, and playing with other dogs wasn’t as much fun without her friend. 

Unfortunately, she was again without protection from the burden of this dark and cold place, and the shelter began to take its toll on her. Poor Misty is on the brink again and needs the help of good souls. 

“She is gentle, affectionate, playful, good with other dogs, and knows her basic commands,” the shelter staff wrote. “Poor Misty💔. We are desperately looking for a home for this sweet, deserving girl!”
“Can you help her?” they asked at the end.
