When Furby first arrived at Austin Pets Alive! (APA!) from a local shelter, he was barely hanging on. The 1-month-old goldendoodle puppy had several different medical battles he was fighting, but his rescuers weren’t even close to ready to give up on him.
There were several days where it didn’t seem like the little pup would make it, but he proved to be a fighter, and slowly but surely, he started to improve.
Still, Furby had some neurological issues going on and was unable to walk or even sit up on his own. He kept trying, though, proving that his spirit was strong and he had an incredible will to live despite all the odds being stacked against him.
“Sadly, Furby’s story highlights a bigger issue,” Luis Sanchez, director of public relations and communications at APA!, told The Dodo. “He was surrendered as a sick puppy, part of a litter whose other pups reportedly showed no symptoms. While his exact history is unknown, the demand for designer breeds like goldendoodles too often leads to puppies bred for profit rather than health, increasing the likelihood of medical complications and shelter surrenders.”
Eventually, Furby was strong enough to head to a foster home — and that’s where he shocked everyone and began to truly thrive.
Being around his foster siblings and receiving love from his foster humans helped bring new life to little Furby. Before long, he was running, playing and learning how to be carefree. The puppy who could barely lift his head was suddenly hopping around like a little bunny. It was more than anyone could have ever hoped for.
“[H]e is playing with his foster siblings and learning what love is,” Sanchez said.
Furby almost didn’t make it, but thanks to his friends at APA!, he’s now living his second chance. He still has some more recovering to do, but hopefully soon he’ll be ready for his forever home.
