Adams County Pet Rescue: Transforming lives one animal at a time

For animal rescuers, each day brings new challenges. The work is more than physically demanding — it’s an emotional journey filled with both triumphs and heartbreaks. At Adams County Pet Rescue in Othello, Washington, staff were hoping for a moment of reprieve from the daily stress when an all-too-familiar scene unfolded. What they encountered next would once again test their resilience and compassion. Outside their rescue center, they noticed a cardboard box abandoned on the sidewalk.

With years of experience, they already suspected what might be inside. Their worst fears were confirmed when they opened the box to find a heartbreaking note scrawled on the top: “Found on HWY 17.” Inside, seven 9-week-old puppies huddled together, staring up at them with wide, confused eyes. The discovery left the staff overwhelmed with sadness and frustration. “I think that was the general response from everyone here that day,” said Anita Plancarte, a staff member at the rescue, when interviewed by The Dodo. “‘Not again.’”

The team could tell these puppies had been through a lot, but the little ones were not aggressive or defensive. “They seemed a little, tiny bit … maybe scared?” Anita explained. “But not in an aggressive way or trying to bite people. They’re just unsure.”

Although the staff were unprepared for an intake like this, they wasted no time in bringing the puppies inside and starting the process of care. However, their resources were already stretched thin. Supplies like wet food and puppy kibble were running dangerously low, prompting them to appeal to their community for donations through Facebook.

In their post, the team expressed not only their immediate needs but also their growing frustration with the ongoing problem of abandoned pets. “Crazy things happen to us all the time!” they wrote. “We could decide to not share all the times this happens and just keep it to ourselves or we can share it with you. We share with you so people can see why we are full, why we need more people to spay and neuter their dogs, and why when people are on the waiting list and wondering why it’s taking so long, they can see the reality of it. Why our staff is burned out along with every shelter staff person in Washington state!”

They aptly ended the post with, “Be part of the solution!”

Thankfully, the seven puppies are now safe and in the care of the rescue team. Their future looks promising as they prepare to find loving homes. But the staff know that for every success story like this one, countless other animals remain vulnerable, with no guarantees of rescue or safety.

Heartbreaking Discovery: Dozens of Dogs Found After Cruelty Charges

Shockingly, this is not the first time she has faced animal cruelty charges; she has a past conviction for similar crimes. We must ensure that no more animals suffer or die in her care!

This incident is a stark reminder of the critical need for responsible pet ownership and proactive solutions like spaying and neutering. By addressing these issues, we can work toward a future where fewer animals face abandonment and heartbreak. The rescuers at Adams County Pet Rescue hope their story inspires others to take action, ensuring a better life for all animals.
