Recently, a man named Ray was out shopping at Dollar General when he noticed someone tiny and lost out of the corner of his eye.
“This little dog [was] running down the aisle,” Ray said in a video for The Dodo. “It was kind of funny.”
Ray introduced himself to the little dog, who quickly took a liking to him. The pair waited in the store for animal control authorities to arrive. All the while, the pup cuddled up to Ray, seemingly anxious for affection.
Eventually, Ray received word that animal control personnel wouldn’t be able to come that night. The animal experts asked Ray if he’d be comfortable taking the pup home for the time being, and Ray jumped at the opportunity to babysit his new friend.
Back home with Ray, the dog excitedly licked her rescuer’s face and happily settled into a pile of blankets.
“She crawled up on my shoulder and just let out a sigh,” Ray said. “Like, ‘That’s it, I’m done, I’m tired, I’m home.’”
At that moment, Ray realized the truth. The dog was right — she’d found the place she belonged.
“I was like, ‘Aw, that’s it,’” Ray said. “‘You’re mine.’”
But keeping the pup wasn’t so simple. Ray had to surrender her to a local shelter for a few weeks while authorities processed her and made sure she didn’t belong to anyone already.
During these weeks, Ray visited the dog almost every other day, counting down until the moment she’d be his forever. Finally, the day came.
Ray officially adopted the pup and named her Dolly. Now, they’re inseparable.
“I try to take her with me everywhere I go,” Ray said. “She fits right in.”
