Piled near a cracked sidewalk in St. Louis, Missouri, a group of abandoned baby siblings huddled together, trying to keep warm. A steady rain slowly soaked through their black fur coats. Cold and frightened, the babies made small noises of discomfort, shoving their muzzles deeper into each other’s sides.
When a local bus driver noticed the group suffering in the rain, the worried passerby quickly called Stray Rescue of St. Louis.
“I see six young puppies out here by the road,” the rescue recalls the driver saying. “They need help.”
When rescuers arrived, they hurried over to the puppy pile, scooping each of the four little dogs into their arms.
But where were the other two?
“I see something black back there,” one rescuer said in a video taken at the time. Lo and behold, there were the last two puppies, peeking their weary heads out of the brambles nearby.
At last, everyone was accounted for.
Safe with their rescuers, the puppies enjoyed all the comforts they’d missed.
“We got them all cleaned up and warm and gave them water,” a representative from Stray Rescue of St. Louis said in a video for The Dodo. “They were all so hungry.”
Rescue volunteers soon opened their homes to the puppies, eager to aid their road to recovery and shepherd them into the futures they deserve.
“They went to foster really quickly,” the representative said. “They’ll be on to a better life.”
