Rescuers Free Kitten Trapped Behind Wall

Last week, a woman called South Metro Fire Rescue (SMFR) with a breathless plea for help. She’d just watched her young puppy jump off the bed and fall right through the floor of her three-story home — and he was nowhere to be found.

“A 12-week-old, 5-pound Pekinese puppy named Archie Bean … [fell] through an open floor vent on the third floor of a townhome,” SMFR wrote on X, previously Twitter. “Archie unintentionally slipped through the uncovered vent after jumping from the bed …”

Archie plummeted down the open vent, sending him into the home’s intricate ductwork and far beyond his mother’s reach. The frightened mom called SMFR immediately, and help arrived minutes later.

First responders with SMFR’s Tower 45, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and Plumbline Services quickly got to work trying to locate the pup. They had no idea exactly where Archie was stuck — but they could faintly hear his cries for help.

“When the crew from Tower 45 first arrived on the scene, they could hear Archie’s whimpers echoing throughout the house,” SMFR wrote. “The primary goal was to locate him and bring him to safety as quickly as possible.”

The rescuers tried to follow Archie’s whimpers throughout the three-story house to no avail. After a few failed attempts, they decided to cut into the walls and get a closer look.

“[They] cut multiple holes in the home’s walls and ceiling to access the ductwork system,” SMFR wrote. “The team deployed a small camera through a hole in the ductwork to pinpoint Archie’s exact location.”

The rescuers held their breaths as they pushed the camera through the vent pipes. They were just starting to lose hope when the camera picked up a familiar clump of white fur in the basement’s HVAC.

“Archie was finally spotted, bringing a collective sigh of relief to all involved in the rescue mission,” SMFR wrote.

The first responders rushed to the basement and carefully pulled Archie from the duct. They placed the unharmed dog in his mother’s arms, and the two melted into each other with gratitude. Archie was shaken up from the ordeal, but he was overjoyed to be reunited with his mom again.

After helping Archie decompress, the first responders waved goodbye and headed out to their next call. They haven’t seen Archie since, but they’re comforted knowing he’s safe in his family’s arms again.

“As Archie happily reunites with his grateful owners, the community celebrates a tale of compassion and resilience in the face of adversity,” SMFR wrote. “[It was] a heartwarming rescue effort.”
