Emily Fisher and her dog, Brady, have always loved going on runs together. But earlier this year, after Fisher went through a divorce, she decided that she and Brady were going to embark on a new running journey together: training for a marathon.
Every time she would go out on a training run, Brady would run right alongside her. Fisher strongly believes that Brady’s company was what got her through her most difficult runs.
“I honestly would not have [trained] without him,” Fisher told The Dodo.
Fisher started taking a photo of Brady during their runs every day to keep herself accountable. Those photos slowly transformed into videos, and soon she was documenting her and Brady’s entire journey on TikTok.
For anyone who sees Fisher’s TikToks, it’s obvious that Brady enjoys going on the runs. He likes to participate in every aspect of the training — even the stretching. Without any prompting from Fisher, Brady noticed the way she was stretching before her runs and decided to mimic her.
“It was such a partnership. When I stretched, he stretched. When I ran, he ran. It was so cute and cool,” Fisher said.
Some people might worry that training for a marathon would be too intense for a dog. It goes without saying that training for a marathon is grueling — but not for Brady.
“He just wants to go, go, go. After every single training run he would come back home and bring me his toys, [wanting to play],” Fisher said.
The only time Fisher and Brady had to be separated was the day of the actual marathon, as dogs aren’t allowed to join their humans for the race.
Toward the end of the marathon, Fisher was struggling. As she was running the last mile, her calf was hurting, and she just wanted the whole thing to be over. But thankfully, Fisher and her twin brother, Mike, had planned something super special for the end of the marathon.
Mike brought Brady along and they waited near the finish line. As Fisher passed by, Mike dropped Brady’s leash — letting him choose to join the race with Fisher by his side.
It was a moment of pure joy and celebration of everything they’d been through together.
“As soon as I saw Brady, seeing him all happy made me sprint to the finish line,” Fisher said. “All the people were … cheering for him too.”
As usual, even after bounding over the finish line, Brady had a ton of energy left over. So Fisher got to celebrate finishing her marathon by taking Brady to the park and playing fetch with him for an hour. (They did take a few days to sleep afterwards.)
This isn’t the end of Fisher and Brady’s marathon journey. Fisher is planning on running her next marathon this October. And just like last time, Brady will train with Fisher, staying by her side for each step she runs.
