A couple of months back, Arteman Córdova was out fishing with a few friends on a lake near his home in Ecuador when he made the catch of a lifetime.
It all began when Córdova heard the sound of whimpering from the shore in the distance — then he heard a splash.
Squinting from where he stood on his boat, Córdova realized that a small black figure had entered the water and was heading straight toward him.
It was a little puppy swimming eagerly out to greet him.
“We were anchored, so we couldn’t move the boat closer,” Córdova told The Dodo. “I was in awe that the puppy would jump into the water and swim to the boat without knowing me.”
The two weren’t strangers for long.
After lifting the little dog aboard the boat, Córdova came to understand the puppy’s desperation — she was starving. Córdova suspects that she had been abandoned nearby and swam out to him to ask for help.
And she’d found it.
Córdova shared his lunch with her, giving her the name Medusa. But their story doesn’t end here.
“In my mind, while she was swimming toward me, I knew I was going to adopt her,” Córdova said.
That’s exactly what he did.
“I’ve had Medusa for two months now,” Córdova said. “She’s adapted very well to my family. We all love her very much.”
That day, Medusa’s life had changed forever — and Córdova’s had, too.
“[Finding her] was something amazing,” he said. “I feel happy with Medusa.”
