Rescuers Find Dog ‘Crying’ Outside Shelter, Abandoned With Only A Short Note

Tied to a pole outside the Pennsylvania SPCA, a gray dog warily greeted the morning light. The gentle pup had recently been abandoned outside the shelter with only a short note, reading, in part, “Good Puppy. House Broken. Don’t Have A Name.”

Soon enough, she had a name — Minerva. When rescuers found Minerva outside the shelter doors, they noticed discharge leaking from her round, sad eyes.

“[It] made her look as if she had been crying,” Pennsylvania SPCA wrote in a Facebook post.

Shelter staff members were heartbroken by Minerva’s situation.

“We had no idea how long she’d been there — was it for a few minutes or a few hours?” a representative from the Pennsylvania SPCA told The Dodo.

Once indoors, Minerva trembled in her kennel, unaware that she had no reason to worry.

“She was so terrified,” Pennsylvania SPCA wrote in the post. “But she was safe with us now.”

Initially, Minerva was very shut-down and shy. Day by day, she gained a bit of confidence.

“When she had the opportunity to come out of her kennel and visit one of our assessment rooms, she would tentatively take steps toward our staff, wagging her tail all the way,” the representative said. “She so wanted to be loved, but she just wasn’t certain how to go about it.”

Rescuers knew Minerva would soon be someone’s lifelong best friend, and they were right. It didn’t take long before Minerva’s family noticed her face on social media and darted to the shelter to meet her.

“Like so many others, Minerva’s family was compelled by her story,” the representative said. “[They] wanted to be the happy ending.”

Cozy and cared for in her new home, Minerva is finally where she’s meant to be.

“Like every new pup, it is an adjustment,” the representative said. “But her family loves her so much and are dedicated to giving her the life she always deserved!”
