Late last month, a dog named Freddie was enjoying a walk with his family along the River Thames in England when disaster struck. Exploring the edge of the sea wall, Freddie mistakenly wandered a bit too far. In seconds, the pup fell 14 feet into the waves below.

Thankfully, Freddie’s family knew who to call.

“Freddie’s owner knew exactly what to do — by calling 999 and asking for the coastguard,” Gravesend RNLI wrote in a Facebook post.

Hearing about Freddie’s situation, rescuers from Gravesend RNLI jumped into a lifeboat. Approaching the scene, they saw Freddie’s nervous black eyes peeking out from above the greenish-gray water.

The rescue team pulled up alongside Freddie, who gratefully accepted their help. Soon, the pup was safe inside the lifeboat.

Journeying back to shore with Freddie in tow, the rescue team gave port staff quite the surprise.

“I noticed the lifeboat with the flashing blue lights against the shore, next minute it was coming towards me,” Tilbury Port line handler Chris Turner said in a press release. “I didn’t expect them to moor up at Tilbury Terminal with a dog on board!”

Back on the dock, Freddie shook the water from his coat and excitedly reunited with his relieved family.

Rescuers were glad that Freddie’s scary story had a happy ending.

“It’s always a great feeling to witness the reuniting of a dog with its owner,” RNLI volunteer Aaron Reynolds said in the press release. “Especially after jumping a [14-foot] wall into a wet landing in the Thames!”
