Driver Slams On Brakes To Save Two Puppies Clinging To Life In A Stream

It’s hard to surprise the experienced rescuers at Special Needs Animal Rescue & Rehabilitation Northeast (SNARR) — after 13 years of saving animals around their Brewster, New York, neighborhood, they’ve witnessed almost everything. But one call SNARR received earlier this month about two abandoned puppies was unlike anything they’d ever seen.

“[These] two innocent puppies have endured unimaginable cruelty,” SNARR wrote on Facebook. “They were thrown from a moving vehicle into a stream …”

The Labrador retriever-mix puppies plummeted into the stream and thrashed around trying to escape. One puppy managed to claw out of the water, but the other remained half-submerged.

Thankfully, a Good Samaritan witnessed the event and dropped everything to save the puppies. The loving stranger scooped the babies up from the stream, then rushed them to SNARR’s headquarters without skipping a beat.

The puppies were exhausted, soaked and scared, but medical exams soon confirmed the Good Samaritan had saved them just in time.

“These fragile souls are incredibly lucky to be alive,” SNARR wrote. “Thanks to a compassionate Good Samaritan who bravely rescued them from the stream, they now have a chance to survive.”

The puppies, later named Tucker and Charlotte, were in serious condition when they entered SNARR. In addition to parasites, the siblings had water in their lungs and road rash across their bodies.

The medical team soon created a treatment plan to address the babies’ physical ailments. And, by showering them with love every day, they aimed to heal Tucker and Charlotte’s emotional trauma.

“We have no idea what further challenges lie ahead, but we are determined to fight for their lives,” SNARR wrote.”

With all the love and attention they received at SNARR, Tucker and Charlotte quickly started to feel like themselves again. The puppy siblings’ personalities soon blossomed, and they were making strides with their medical treatments.

After a few weeks at SNARR, the puppies were ready to go to a foster home together.

The puppies soon found an amazing foster home, where they’ve been ever since. They now spend their days cuddling together on warm, snuggly beds and taking turns kissing their foster mom.

“Their foster mom said they are absolutely the most adorable babies!” SNARR’s Lauren F. told The Dodo. “They are playful and loving … and they get so excited when they get out of the kennel in the morning and see you for the first time!”

Tucker and Charlotte have since finished their treatments and fully recovered medically from the accident. They are still startled by loud noises and big movements — part of their emotional trauma from the event — but their caregivers are helping them gain confidence every day.

The little ones hope to go to an adoptive home soon. Until then, they’ll keep enjoying time with their foster mom, whose love continues to help them heal.

“They’re learning they’re in a safe place now,” Laura said.
