Life can be lonely for a shelter dog, so it’s good to have a friend by your side. At one South Carolina shelter, two long-term shelter dogs named Boone and Rellie formed a sweet bond and became best friends.
And recently, they got some incredible news…
Dogs Rellie and Boone each spent months in the Greenville Humane Society: Rellie arrived last December, and Boone’s owners surrendered him in May.
Both dogs struggled to find homes, each becoming long-term residents. While they were loving dogs with many great qualities, months passed with no interested adopters for either of them.
Rellie was described as an “energetic and friendly girl” who could be shy around new people but quickly warms up and shines bright with an outgoing personality. They wrote that she would do best in an active family. But for months, no one seemed interested and she became the shelter’s longest-waiting dog.
Boone, meanwhile, was described as the “happiest boy ever” who was “absolutely fantastic at balancing random things on his head.” He is also deaf, and while he understands sign language commands and is well-trained, he needed a family willing to put the extra effort in and be patient with him.
Months went by with neither of these sweet dogs finding a home — but during their long wait, they had each other to keep them company, and formed a sweet friendship.
“Boone and Rellie took daily walks together at the shelter,” the shelter’s marketing manager Emily Zheng told McClatchy News. “They played every day in play group.”
And this week, the dogs’ luck finally turned around — the Greenville Humane Society announced amazing news for both Rellie and Boone.
In an October 21 Facebook post, they revealed that after 10 long months in the shelter, Rellie had finally been adopted! “Rellie spent 310 days waiting for someone to step up for her. Someone willing and patient enough to give her a chance,” they wrote. “A chance to show them just how absolutely wonderful she truly is. And just last week, that happened.”
But that wasn’t even the best part. Rellie’s new family also decided to take in another dog — her best friend, Boone!
“Last week, they went home together. Their new family continues to update us and tells us that they’re both doing wonderfully and are settling in,” Greenville Humane Society wrote. “Our hearts are full. This is a reminder of why we do what we do. Why we show up every day for the homeless pets in our community. Why we never give up.”
We’re so glad Rellie and Boone finally got adopted, and better yet have a home where they can be together! ❤️ Please share this heartwarming story!
