It was a sunny Saturday morning in Morrisville, Pennsylvania, when an unsuspecting resident noticed unusual activity at their local dog park. Inside the fenced dog park, six large puppies were running around aimlessly with no humans in sight.

Taped on the gate was a handwritten note with a heartbreaking confession.

“Dear, person who finds these dogs,” the note read. “I rescued them from an old lady who has too many dogs … This is the safest place I could think of to put them. I hope they find homes.”

The Good Samaritan called the Morrisville Borough Police Department (MBPD), who raced to the dog park. Within minutes, the cops were face-to-face with an aimless pack of puppies.

“Upon arrival, Morrisville Police observed six 50-60 [pound] dogs running freely in the Morrisville Dog Park,” MBPD wrote in a press release shared with The Dodo. “Police remained on scene while the Bucks County SPCA was en-route.”

While waiting for the SPCA to arrive, the police combed through the note and discovered the heartbreaking truth about the pups’ past.

“[T]hese dogs were rescued from an owner [who] could not provide adequate care and, subsequently, were brought to the Morrisville Dog Park where they would be discovered,” MBPD wrote. “The unknown person [who] brought these dogs to the Morrisville Dog Park attempted to keep them but was not able to due to their apartment’s rules, and they believed that the Morrisville Dog Park was the best solution for these dogs …”

The police wished the rescuer had contacted them first before abandoning the dogs at the park, but they were more worried about the dogs left at the original home.

“At this time, the Morrisville Police Department is more concerned about the remaining animals [who] are in the care of the original owner,” MBPD wrote. “Although the MBPD does not condone the abandonment of any animals, there is a larger issue in this case that we would like to isolate and make sure these animals are all safe.”

When the SPCA arrived, three of the six pups had already secured homes with loving neighbors. The remaining three pups headed to Bucks County SPCA, hoping to find their forever homes soon.

The three remaining dogs are still at Bucks County SPCA today, waiting for the perfect families to scoop them up. The police, on the other hand, are continuing their investigation into the dogs’ original owners.

MBPD hopes to get in touch with the dogs’ rescuer or original owner soon. In the meantime, they are pleading with the public to report any cases of animal neglect or abuse to authorities immediately.

“The MBPD recommends contacting your local SPCA or local police department if you believe any animal may not be receiving the proper treatment or care,” MBPD wrote. “Please surrender your animals to shelters, and do not abandon them, even if the intentions are in good faith.”
