A few months ago, a senior dog arrived at ACCT Philly, left there by family members who couldn’t care for him anymore.

The 15-year-old boy’s name was Shock, and he wasn’t feeling so well. His hair was full of thick mats, his nails were severely overgrown, his eyes had cataracts and he suffered from a head tilt that caused him to stumble when walking.

But to rescuers at the Pennsylvania SPCA (PSPCA), where Shock was eventually transferred, the pup’s physical condition wasn’t the most heartbreaking part of his story.

“Shock seemingly had no idea what had happened, no understanding of why he was abandoned or why everything he once knew was slipping away,” the PSPCA wrote in a Facebook post. “His entire world had been turned upside down, and he was completely alone.”

The rescue team shaved the mats out of Shock’s fur and placed him on an IV for hydration.

Rescuers prepared themselves for the possibility that Shock might not make it. But it turned out Shock wasn’t done fighting.

“Shock surprised us all,” the PSPCA wrote. “Slowly, he began to improve. His tail started to wag again, and he found the strength to take a few tentative steps. He’s still a bit head-shy, but the spark of life in his eyes is undeniable.”

The resilient pup continued getting better and eventually started looking for a new home. Soon enough, he found one.

Finally, Shock’s story was looking bright.

“[F]or the last time, his life is changing again,” the PSCPA wrote in a post. “This time for the better, as he heads to his new forever home. Happy life, sweet boy.”
